York 2 Mo. 23rd 1759
Dear Friend
On my return here this morning I have to my great satisfaction
rec'd by John Stamper thy Letter of the 13th Ult[?]: with the other Letters and
Horse and so far as I perceive all the things thou sent with him and also twenty
pack saddles with a Letter from J. Whitelock which tho' they are not so good
nor perhaps so costly as those made here yet will be of service if I can procure
horses to mount them upon which I am not without expectation of doing
I wrote to thee on the 13th at this place which not being sent away I now
deliver to John as it contains a part of the History as may seem to be the
effect of impatience I am now supplied largely and my heart is truly thank-
full for thine and my other Friends favour and kind remembrance.
I hope never witingly[sic] to abuse the confidence by thee/reposed in me
but as it is a business new to me whom thou must know to be weak and strugling[sic]
with frailties incident to human nature and that the present is no trifling
affair I hope thou wilt not only remember me in they Access to Divine favour
but also carefully communicate to me such Instructions as may from time
to time seem expedient which may be of great service even tho' I may not be
enabled to pursue them in every particular.
I wrote to thee in a hurry at one Crawford a little beyond Black's
gap and sent by a man to Harris's Ferry but I think there was not much in it
beside what mentioned in the one I send now. And having a little leisure
last first day at Frederick before I set out hitherward I committed a few things
to writing a Copy whereof I now send incomplete as I then left it and I am not
yet properly informed of the Facts said to have happened at Pittsbourg[sic] but sup-
pose if any thing very material has troubled them they'll presently send for a
reinforcement and thou mayst be more authenticly inform'd in such things
than I. And as to what will be necessary to commit it to writing tho' it be short and
then I can send thee a copy and I am glad of the hints given in thy present
Letter respecting my conduct towards them.
I despair of geting all the goods forwarded at once without delaying longer
than will be agreeable either to thee or me but am in hope to raise 50 horses
or near it which I cannot understand will carry beside Forage and provision
above 50 of goods and I do not perceive that it will be any considerable delay
or disadvantage upon the whole to make two tripsas we may make up all
the goods into Packs before we leave Cumberland and Thos. Kinton tells me
we can have hands sufficiently capable of coming back with the Brigade &
with them so that we may be dealing off the first load while they are com'g
with the second James may either be either be sent back with them or left at Cumber-
land till they return for the 2nd load as may seem best.
Thos. Kinton whom I was with yesterday says he must spend a Couple
of days the begining[sic] of next week with Captn. Calender in order to bring
his affairs nearer to a Settlement the Captn. having sent for him for that
