Loving Friend
Having on my way hither call'd at Thomas Kinton's I found him
very willing to go out this winter and think he seems the most likely man
I have seen for the purpose; he proposed to go this day to Carlisle and endea-
vour to get his Accot with St. Clair settled and then to make enquiry for Pack horses
and drivers, of which he thinks he can readily procure as many as we shall want,
but till he hears from thee or me he is not to enter into any agreements, therefore if
thou canst not get waggons, which is the way I choose to nor pack horses there, as cheap
as he can procure them which is 18P day for horses & 3P day for the drivers
I think it will be best to imploy[sic] him and get the good up to Cumberland-
where upon mature consideration I am persuaded they must be sent to. If waggons
can be had by all means get them, tho' it be for only a part. Thou mayst leave
the shot, half of the lead, half of the Powder, half of the Guns, half of the Strouds,
the ready made Clothes except the Shirts which must all go and there will still
be an Assortment. All the Saddles will be much wanted and the bread & Cheese
which it will be prudent to spare as long as you can, and you should take 2 or
300 lb of Beef and Pork, and as much Corn as you can lest you should not get
as much as you may want at the Fort. If thou meets with Thomas Cressap
be as Sociable with and respectfull[sic] to him as thou canst, but avoid any other
concern with him for reasons I hinted to thee. Tho' Patowmach should be
open I would not have the Goods go by water unless som[sic] person of credit would
insure[sic] them safe up at Cumberland for double Freight and then thou mayst
send the Shot[?] one Cask of the Sead and some of the Strouds & one Bale of
the Matchcoats & one of Blankets & the Cask of Coats &
Thou should remember to get a License from the Prothonotary of the
County in which Fort Cumberland lies.
Joseph Chambers says he can supply as many Pack Saddles as will be
wanted at a few days notice at the Lancaster Price & equally good.
Write to me as often as Possible and always send a copy by another con-
veyance for fear of accidents. Direct to the care of John Smith of Carlisle
Joseph Chambers or Nathan Hussey of York or Geo[?] Saunderson of Lancaster.
I expect to write to thee again in a few days. My Love to thee & James
is all I can now add being just seting[sic] out homeward.
Thy Assured Friend I.P.
If thou canst get Pack horses I would still advise if they
must go on horses the imploying[sic] Tho.[?] Kenton because he understands packing the Goods. Same[?] Stamill[?] live very
near Kentons and will advise or assist in anything he can. They live near Bermudian Creek in York County
when thou writes send me a copy of this for I have not time to transcribe it.
[on side]
When thou hast any thing to write of it will be best to do it that it may lie ready for any Sudden Conveyance
and so date it when thou delivers it.
I.P.
