1756 A Minute of Proceedings relating to the first Treaty to the Indians at Eastons -- so far as concerns Friends.
7 mo: 19 Captn. Newcastle to John Pumpshear returned to Philadelphia from Teaogon & acquainted the Governor that in Consequence of the Message he had sent by them, Teedyuseung the Delaware King with about 30 of his People were come to Bethlehem and were waiting there in expectation of seeing the Governor or of receiving his orders to come forward hither to have a Conference with him. The Governor immediately by a message acquainted the Assembly of the necessity of holding a Treaty with these people, that as a cessation from hostilities had been agreed on, the Terms for a lasting Peace might be settled &c. in consequence of which the Assembly appointed two Comissioners to attend the Governor to the Treaty & voted 300 pounds towards the Expences of it. And Newcastle & Pumpshear informing several Friends in this City, that the Indians having heard that the first proposals of pursuing pacific Measures were made & promoted by Friends, it would be absolutely necessary by attending the Treaty with some things necessary for their releif, to convince them of the sincerity of our professions of Friendship & desires to be instrumental in restoring & establishing Peace in Consequence thereof on 20th: 7 mo: 1756 Several Friends mett together & unanimously agreed that it would be necessary to enter into a subscription to raise a sum of Money to defray the Charges, which have already arisen & what will now immediately become necessary & likewise to provide such a fund that on future occasions we may be enabled to promote the interest, Welfare & peace of our Country by contributing towards the Expenses of Treaties with the Indians in such manner as may appear to be most conducive of the Publick good & tend to improve the confidence the Indians have repeatedly & especially of late expressed in men of our Peaceable principles: & after several Conferences on 22nd, 7 mo: The following preamble of a subscription was agreed to, viz.
"We the Subscribers from a consideration of the necessity of regaining and preserving the Friendship of the Indians, who were the Native Inhabitants of this Country & being in hopes the pacific Measures lately proposed and now promoted may have that good effect, or order to demonstrate our hearty concern to maintain the Principles of Peace & good will we have professed to them & to contribute our assistance towards so important a service in a manner consistent with our Peacible Principles do hereby promise & oblige ourselves, our heirs, executors & administration to pay unto Anthony Morris, John Reynell, Jonathan Miflin, Jeremiah Elfreth, Jeremiah Warder, Israel Pemberton, Joseph Morris,
