To the Monthly Meeting
The Committee appointed to the care of the schools for
black people and their descendants, Informa the monthly
meeting, that escepting the summer vacation they have
been regularly continued during the past year.
John Reeve acting as Teacher of the boys,
and Julianna Powell as Teacher of the girls; which duties
they have performed to the satisfaction of the committee.
Since last report 61 boys and 77 girls have been
admitted of whom 6 of the former & 6 of the latter were
entered as pay scholars.
The average attendance has been about
34 boys and 36 girls.
The branches are spelling, reading,
writing, geography & arithmetic, with exercises on the black
board & the girls are instructed in sewing.
Portions of the Holy Scriptures are daily read to the scholars
and four days in each week the New Testament is used
as a reading book.
The circumstances of the scholars generally
belonging to these schools are such, that notwithstanding
the efforts of the committee to propmote regular attendance,
by endeavouring to convince their parents & caretakers of
the great advantages education confers, and to persuade
them to make due exertions to send them regularly to school,
a large number are very frequently absent: And though
