Letter from Thomas Clarkson

              Dear sir!

I have to inform you, that when I was in London last, I paid 5 [pounds] to Messrs. Pugett & Co. St. Pauls Church in behalf of your newly formed Society. I paid it there on the 18 Day of February. It was paid at Pugetts for Latouches Bank, Dublin but for the Service of the "Negro's friend."

I am very sorry to be obliged to [inform] you that his majesty ministers have not answered the confidence which we had put in them. They have amused us by writing Letters in an apparently peremptory tone to the Colonies, where they have enforced Nothing. Nor can I find that they mean to enforce any thing. If they should make Slaves Evidence [valued] by an act of Parliament this Session, it is as much as they will do, unless we can call the Attention of Parliament successfully to the Subject. They have produced, it appears, a new order of Council for the Government of the Crown Colonies, with some alterations, but when we came to examine these, we found that the new order was not better, but in some respects, more unfavourable than the old. Thus seven years have passed away since the Parliamentary Resolutions on the Subject, and but little has been done, and very little indeed may this be accounted, when we consider that the Crown has entire Power over all its Colonies of this Description.
