| Description | Legal document. Indenture for a messuage made between Richard Capel and Charles Cunningham in the County of Essex. Document consists of two pieces of parchment, the top piece being a continuation of the bottom piece. On the recto of the beginning of the document is "This Indenture" printed in large black ink letters. Within the capital "T" is a seal in black ink which is topped by a crown and contains a coat of arms that is surrounded by the words "Honi soit qui mal y pense." Manuscript is cursive in black ink. Text is bounded on the top, left, and right sides by double or triple red ink lines. Tax stamps for 1 shilling and six pence are attached to each document. The bottom of the documents are folded up together and sealed by means of faded red string. Attached to the strand of string in the middle of the fold is a red wax seal with the side portrait of a bearded man facing left. The signature of Richard Capel is on either side of the seal. Prickings on the left and right edges. Top portion of the bottom piece of parchment has a wavy-cut edge. The verso of the beginning sheet of parchment contains a summary of the document as well as the signatures of witnesses (Elizabeth Lasinby and Mathias Deye). |
