WELCOME TO FRESHMEN, MEETING HOUSE
7:30 P.M. Thursday, Sept. 21, 1939.
It gives me gr eat pleasure to welcome you
as a class to ~¥a rthmore College, and it will gi ve me and
my wife much gr eater pl easure to welcome you individually
when you come to our house for tea on Sunday afternoon.
I suppose tha t this moment when you enter
college is to many of you, perhaps to all of you, a very
serious and perhaps an anxious time. Certainly it is a
very important time , and the adventure which you are now
beginning no one can t ell where it may l ead . It may lead
to great deeds and accomplishments . We have heard wonderful
things about the membe r s of thi s cla ss, and I t hink you have
a right to feel proud of yoursel ves , particularl y if y ou
knew how many people had been refused admission in order t o
make places for you . But I think your principal f eeling
ought to be generally one of humility when you think of the
things you will do here at college and in the future . This
pariod you spend here before the upperclassmen come back ,
which will be a busy one , will not be too busy , so that you
will not have time t o think . I hope you will think about all
t he t hings you are going to do here and in the world . You
have a right t o aspire t o anything . As I face you and think
of the thi ngs you have done and the things which have been
said about you , I am forced t o beli eve there is in this class
the ability t o do anything you determine to accomplish. And
what you do in the world will depend on what you dream- -will
depend on what you want to do and on what you like to do .
