North East Harbor8 mo. 25Dear RachelMother got a letter from thee this evening in which thee asks my opinion of the Presidential candidates-- Now I dont suppose thee expects to vote but as thee has sons who will & who may be influenced by their mothers sage advice I will send thee a copy of a paper which gives some extracts from Rosevelts speeches made during the past 8 or 10 years. Which will I think help thee to form an opinion about the safety of continuing Rosevelt in the presidency. As to my opinion of Judge Parker, I told Francis Kane when he was about to go to the St Louis convention that I hoped that the Democrats would nominate him, that if they wished to secure the support of the sober portion of the Republicans they must nominate him or some one like him. & when he was nominated I felt glad. not that I felt very hopeful of his being elected, for the mob longs to be led by a bully whether he be a Napoleon or a Rosevelt, & the mob may sulk[?], but it gives a man a chance to vote for an
