1829 August 29, New York, to children

              [Note in another hand] Henry Cope to his childrenNew York 7th day. 8th mo 29th 1829My dear childrenDo you think we stay long from home? The three weeks are gone, & we greatly desire to see you again; but although we have omitted much that we wished to have looked at in our travels, yet it is but this morning that we got back again to New York, and of this place and its neighborhood we have seen but very little. We should now be walking, were it not for the rain which confines us to the house. There is however some prospect of its clearing away soon, and I will not write you a long letter therefore at this time.We have been at Boston and remained there three days and a half. Many of its streets are very crooked - the houses mostly built very high, - four stories & some even five stories, - with very small yards. But they have a beautiful open place which they call the common; much larger than both Washington & State house squares together, having on three sides five rows of large shady elm trees, with a beautiful little pond in it. There we saw the little boys trying to make their little ships sail, and fine fun they appeared to have. But one little boy not minding what he was about fell splash into the water.
