Florence, march 20th, 78.
Dear Sister Clem, We have been on such a rampage this afternoon, out from two to six o, clock with Miss Baker, (Miss Lang- muirs sister in law). First we went to four Sculptors studios, including those of the two sons of Hiram Powers. They don't seem to be equal to their father in genius, though they are very pleasant men. then after the art we had a feast of nature, for we walked from the Porta Romana out the Poggia Imperiale, by Galileo's towers, down the hill again by San Miniata, resting now & then on the stone seats, or walls & having the most charming views of the valley, & city & mts, & Fiesole as we went along. We gathered some flowers too in a wheat field & olive orchard combined. We were yesterday at Mr. Brevourts studio of N.Y. Dussledorf school, with Miss Baker & Mr. Kirkwood who is an American who was a Dr., who is an Author, who is soon going to return to his native heath by way of Ligham[?], &
