1865 October 16, Newport, to Lilly and Chelly

              Newport 10mo. 16. 1865

Dear Lilly & Chelly

At last we have had rain- a good old fashioned storm, filling the water carts, laying the dust & last & not least picking up such a sea on the south shore as one gets a chance of looking at only occasionally. It rained seventh day night & laid the dust finely, but clear off in the morning so that we went to meeting. but looking out at Beavertail at dinner time we were surprised to find the sea seeming so high, as we were not aware of there having been a high wind & at that time it was blowing from the north. How ever we ordered our carriages & cousin Emma Alf, Hazen & myself drove down to the shore. Your mother staying at home with Tom & Aunt Anne going to meeting, they not having the necessary faith to [-----] them to run the risk of getting caught in the rain.
