              Muncy 10 mo 20th 1849My dear Anna 
I do not know but I owe thee a letter as much as I owe anyone else, for I do not remember that I ever have written one to thee; and certainly the place held by thee in my affections entitled thee to it. We have had very pleasant weather since we left home except one day, last fourth day, when we were at the Elklands. Then it rained while we were going to meeting and all the while we were there. This prevented me from much enjoyment of the noble forests though which we had to pass. I regretted that, for I take particular delight in looking at the woods in their original wildness before the axe has robbed them of their magnificence. We were three hours in reaching the meeting house though we had but five miles to travel; but it was over stumps & stones, up hill & down hill, bumping & thumping. This with the rain, & being obliged to keep the curtains of the wagon closed, made the ride somewhat tedious. After meeting we went to dinner to a Friend's house two & a half miles distant. This road was, if anything different, even worse than the other; but then the rain had ceased, although the sky was still
