1829 August 25, Boston, to Father

              [Note in another hand] Henry Cope to his FatherBoston 8 mo 25th 1829Dear FatherWe arrived on 7th day at noon having been detained a day & a half at Northhampton longer than we had expected. Every other day a stage leaves that place for Boston at 7 in the morning, and every day a stage at two in the morning. It so occurred that the 7 o'clock stage left Northhampton on the morning after we arrived which was not until night fall; to take it therefore would have given us no opportunity to look at the place & to visit Mount Holyoke. We therefore concluded to take the two o'clock stage on the succeeding day, unless there should be an extra stage for seven o'clock; but on our return from Mount Holyoke, near its foot, & after we had passed the dangerous places, our carriage was upset, and altho' we happily sustained no serious injury, yet Rachel received a bruise which rendered it necessary for her to have a good night's rest. We were thus kept another day. Rachel soon recovered, & were it not that I feel some doubt as to the propriety of my prolonging my absence from home, the delay at that beautiful place would be no cause of regret. I am encouraged by a letter from Alfred dated 14th to think that, as respects business he is doing well without me; and as it is the first time Rachel has ever had the opportunity of seeing our country, except in the vicinity of Philada, I feel a strong inclination to indulge her and myself in viewing
