Dear Wife Thy thoughts this morning as well as mine have been much with the boys who have just started on their voyage - [It] is of course not the serious thing it was once thought to be to take a trip across the sea. A journey on land may take as much time & involve as much risk still all partings are serious - & I think I feel them increasingly so as years roll on. The course of our life has been running very smoothly for many years & we know that changes & separations must come sooner or later. There is but one way, as I told Alfred, to keep us together & that is for each of us to endeavor
