1845 June 25, Philadephia, to Father, Saratoga (N.Y.)

              Philada. 6mo 25. 1845

Dear Father

According to our best calculations this is about the last day to write with any certainty of the letter reaching you. I suppose if you have had the weather we have been favored with since you left you have not enjoyed your trip so much as you would have done had there been less rain. But we have thought it was perhaps all for the best as Annes eyes would be less likely to suffer in cloudy weather. We have had two or three good reads which have improved the appearance of things in the country very much. Things at home are pretty much in the state you left them in. The new boiler just arrived but not put in the fireplace yet & the [cuts] every where. We have all enjoyed our usual health & so far as we know all our friends are ditto. Uncle Alfred has been in town for two or three days past but now that the ship is off will stay at home for a while. He was rather better while not taking medicine but expected when he commenced again that he would feel pretty much as he did when you left. I was out there on first day & so far his looks are concerned should judge him to be somewhat improved. Thomas made an attempt to make an arrangement for us to be transferred from Cartners to Germantown [bar] did not succeed. We have the satisfaction of knowing however that Aunt Caroline has engaged to go there the 1st of 8th mo. & Anna Hartshorne the middle of the 7th. The only other certain boarders besides ourselves are the Boblens & Roberts Smiths families So I trust we may be tolerably comfortable & Mrs Cartner said she would try to make as arrangements if possible by which Thos & myself
