Geneva, July 11, 1880
Dear Alexis,
I want to ask thee a question. Is it necessary in order to effect a division of our property (I mean such a division as shall give thee thy portion at Connymead) is it necessary that I return to America in the Autumn with C & A, as it has been our intention to do, (or at least theirs)? For myself I have not entirely decided, tho' we have partly paid our passages for the 6th Nov. in the steamer "Illinois", on condition that we can change if it seems best to another vessel of the line. It is late to sail, but there seemed to be no good steamer between the first week of October
