My dear Alexis & Lillie
Shall your tardy Aunt Anne try to write you a bit of a letter from this substantial land perhaps to meet you in the land of antiquity, art, and beauty. I cannot describe Pompeii, I cannot say I have been where Paul landed so long, long ago. Yet give me the land of protestant vigorous American for my home, before stale Itily [sic]! do you think that very unappreciative? Do not suppose I think there is nothing of interest there. There seems to me much of the spirit of this world which you may see when abroad, more than in our more practical land.
