1833 December 18, Philadelphia, to Uncle

              Philadelphia 12mo 18th, 1833



Dear Uncle,
 


In accordance with thy request I will try to write a few lines though I fear that there will not be much matter contained in them which will be interesting to thee. We had a fall of snow on Seventh and first day last, which was 8 inches deep in places where the wind had not caused it to drift. We had some sleighing on fist days and on 2nd day morn, but it melted a great deal, and on 3rd day we had a very severe storm which washed it all away – Five small shallop’s were sunk along side of the wharves, and several larger vessels were wrecked in the bay- The winds blew so hard between half past 8 and half past 9 that it was difficult for a man to stand upright, and persons were obliged to go without umbrellas, although the rain rescinded in torrents.
  

	
Cousin Benjamin Sharpless is engaged to be married to Catharine Hoopes, and they are to pass meeting this week- Friends Schools are getting along very well at Haverford schools they have 29 scholars, all of which I believe are very well pleased with their situational, and superintendents, teachers etc. We have 44 scholars at Orange St. 22 in each room, and 13 in the classical department – All the family are well. I send their Love-
