Philada. 6mo. 22. 1833.
I wished very much to have had some conversation with thee during my last visit to Bloomsdale, relative to the subject of our recent & former intercourse with each other, but I thought that an approach to it, seemed disagreeable to thee (2). why did thee, my dear friend, deam it necessary, in several instances during my two last visits to you, to display cold and repulsive manners? I do think that the might have spared my feelings, considering that I had assured thee that I would not obtrude, or press any claim to favour from thee, beyond what might be agreeable to thee.- ladies are sometimes incomprehensible beings, but I understood thee, to say, or it might be implied from what thee said, that thee thought I was in fault in not having written to thee after my return to Woodbourne last Winter. do, I beg of thee, consider the circumstances of the case. I supposed that thy objections to continuing correspondence, arose from delicacy of feelings. I therefore suggested two modes of maintaining an intercourse between us. one through thy Father, and another through my Sister Elenor. but thee seemed to think that it would be a severe trial & effort, to correspond with a gentleman even if engaged to him. thee asked me if I could not conceive it to be so [---] could not make allowance for thee, or something I think to that effect. the motive which I have mentioned was not that which induced thee to object to correspondence, I supposed that the objection arose from want of inclination. if the letter were the fact, would it not have been disagreeable to thee if I had been strenuous in urging the thing? thee asked me during the course
