Pocono Pa. 7 mo.11.1908.
Elizabeth S. Cope,
Dear Cousin,
Thy letter of the 7th inst. was forwarded to me here and has been read with interest.
I have always been glad to be a descendant of Oliver Cope, the stock being a strong one with well marked characteristics, and am pleased to hear of the prospect of a new edition of Gilbert Cope's book.
A year ago it would have been a pleasure to contribute to the fund, the same amount as thy own, but with the present greatly reduced income and the duty helping in the relief of the great army of unemployed workmen

Although Carter writes that he has "always been glad to be a descendant of Oliver Cope" his relation to the Cope family was only by way of his marriage to Mary Anna Cope (the second of his three wives). |
