To my Grandfather.
Thou wouldst not wish that any should shed tears
Because the ravages of Time are grim,
Have meant for thee bowed back, and sight more dim,
Thy spirit rises victor of the years,
And presses forward, daunted by no fears,
Nor were turned aside by wavering whim.
But, though Life’s cup is filled wellnigh the brim,
To us, thy children’s children, still appears
Thy soul to shine as steady, clear and true
As the bright lamp of some tall coastwise light,
Which to an untried, hesitating crew
Flashes its signal though the darkest night,
Bids the young mariners take hold anew
Of life, push on, and lay their course aright.
