My dear brother
Having received a message from thee through a letter to Tom, and not being able to plead sickness as a reason for not writing, I am going to send thee a greeting- Well we are not going to see thee until next spring, it seems a long time, and we were all of us not a little disappointed when the news came. We were counting the days until the time when thee was to sail and beginning to speculate upon the probable length of the passage, when suddenly all our hopes were dashed- I was going to say I would not flatter thee by telling thee what lamentations there were on the part of some of us, but I think it does no one harm to know how much they are loved and missed at home, on the contrary I think
