My dear Mother

Here I am enjoying myself in the country and as I am now free’d from all my lessons and at liberty to spend my time pretty much as I please, I shall commence writing to thee which I have neglected ‘till now, not because I thought thee was indifferent as to how I was coming on and whether I was spending my time pleasantly or not, but because lessons, lessons, lessons occupied every moment of my time and indeed I do think that during such very warm weather as we have had for two or three weeks past, that we are entirely too much confined to study; so thee may judge what was my surprise and delight when on returning from school 3d day afternoon to learn that father had returned bringing with him the delightful intelligence that “mother had given us permission to let us accompany cousin Sally in the country:” So with no small degree of pleasure I bade adieu to school and my daily walk to 12th st at least for some time during the warm weather, and began to prepare for my journey.
