Haverford, 6th mo 17th 1838
Dear Father,
I was very much disappointed in not seeing
thee in town when I came in; I suppose I passed thee on the road; did
thee see me? My tooth has not troubled me any since then. Gillenghan
has been out here twice during the last week & has had good custom.
Franky had one of his teeth pluged; yesterday one of the boys had 13 teeth
pluged and another 6 pluged and 3 drawn. I suppose that altogether
about a dozen boys have had their teeth attended to.
I do not know whether this will find you
in town or not. We heard by Grandfather, who was out here about a week
ago that you went down Jersey on 6th or 7th day. I forget which. Our
Green house has been contracted for with Nolman for $2000 to be 110
feet long, 26 feet wide & 20 feet high. They are going to commence laying
the foundations tomorrow.
We have had very warm dry weather for a
week past, but very cool pleasant evenings. There are very few evenings
in summer that we do not have a fine breeze; the situation of the house
seems to be peculiarly suitable on this account, it stands so high. Though
we are very glad to get home in vacations, yet we are situated so pleasantly
& have so many agreeable ways of employing ourselves in the summer that we
have no wish to exchange places with you in the city. Without being over
burdened with study, our garden to interest us, and pleasant walks for the
