My dear Rachel,
While I am sitting here waiting for the family to come to breakfast I think I will improve the time by beginning a little epistle to thee. You will know by this time what a sad break we have had in our party, it was quite hare to get used to it at first, & after seeing them all to the train we returned to the piazza a rather disconsolate party. I consoled myself soon by getting very much absorbed in my lily but Tom looked cross & said "it was disgusting". I told him I thought Hannah would be very much flat-
