Paradise Row, White S. Sprgs.
7/18/74
Dear Mother:
Thee sees I am making Alexis my amanuensis to avoid any unnecessary fatigue, although I really feel very fresh, considering the length of the journey. It was much less tiresome than I had expected--especially the ride yesterday. It was so cool that I felt quite as well when I arrived here as when I left home. When we reached Allegheny about 6 miles from here, Alfred and Hazen appeared in the train, having walked down to meet us. They both seemed well and in good spirits & I think were really "delighted" to see us. They felt the want, I think, of a few more enterprising young men in the party to take walks, &c.
We are very nicely accomodated in four cottages side by side, Aunt Annie, Mary & I in one, and the gentlemen of the last detachment in another. They are the funniest and most primitive little places you
