Laurel House July 19th
My dear Mama,
Rachel has
spent herself so in writing to thee that it seemed hardly
worth while for me to try, so I thought I wld. wait till her
fever was over, & as this eve. she seemed little inclined to
desert the piazza, I concluded to undertake the task. We
have had a most exercising day in all senses of the word,
but so wonderful is the effect of this mountain air that I
do not feel the least tired. In the first place this
morning we set off in an open wagon for Haines’ fall a
pleasant ride of about 2 miles, but it was after we got
there the “tug of war” began – We had
