Lookout Mountain
"4th of July" 1865.
Dear
Cousin,
I wrote a long letter to you all the other day
(and by the by it is time I had an answer) therefore this
exceedingly warm day do I seat myself for the purpose of
writing to thee – individually – I presume it is noisy
enough with you in Germantown is it not? with us here it is
as quiet as can be, the only way we would know it was the
4"th was Ransom (our man) coming up to the house reporting
that a number of troops were in the valley,– I immediately
came down and could see about five miles from here, a long
black line looking like a huge snake winding up the road
towards Chattanooga – and at noon to day a salute was fired
from the town also –
