A Dirge.
Oh! mournful and dark was that day to me
Which closed o’er thy wat’ry tomb;
And brief and sad
shall the requiem be
That uselessly weeps thy doom.
—
No shroud had’st thou but the green seaweed,
No
dirge but the sea-bird’s cry;
And the noxious things of
Ocean breed,
Where thy cold relics lie.
Yet over
that spot shall memory linger
Where thou from life
dids’t part;
And never shall time’s effacing finger
Wear out thy love from my heart.
For thou wert pure
as the diamond stone,
That drinks and glows with the
beam of morn
And the Muse had mark’d thee for her
own,
Though from her soon was the bright gem torn
