Charleston 3rd mo 12th 1839Dear BrotherI have intended writing to thee for several days and expected ere this to have had a letter finished for thee but I was delayed beyond what I had expected to be by a headache the result of my first seasickness; and my first letter from Charleston I wished to send to some one at home as they wished to hear from me as soon after my arrival at Charleston as I should be able to write--I do not know whether I even have much time now to give to holding some conversation with thee as the evening is pretty well advanced towards 8 o’clock and at 9 we have supper. But I do not know whether I should have an other opportunity of writing for some time and I think perhaps that a letter short though it be if it is as long as circumstances will permit me to write will not be altogether inacceptable to thee-- perhaps thee has heard from Father & Mother such circumstances of our journey as I have related to them in my letters or if thee has not thee must get them to come out (tell thee for I cannot think of travelling over the same ground twise in writing-- I wrote to Sister Mary yesterday (sent the letter this morning having barely room left to acknowledge the receipt of Father’s letter-- It is the only letter I have yet received while this makes the fourth I have written to begun to write rather. I hope we shall find some tomorrow at the post office for us & I shall be glad if I see one directed in thy hand waiting-- If thee has not written it will be too late to tell the now to write to me at Charleston-- but any letter written & sent on or before the 19th will find me at Richmond Va-- we have had a very pleasant journey so far and all varieties in the temperature-- [?] 12 degrees at Baltimore to 74 at Charleston-- yesterday it was [?]to walk in the sunny side of the street-- But I suppose I shall better devote my time if I tell thee something about Charleston-- We arrived here 1st day afternoon & not in the best possible humor for being pleased with everything we saw-- I had been very seasick the night before & retired to my berth about 8 o’clock in the evening as by lying down you are more likely to escape seasickness-- here I lay till 9 o’clock the next morning when I found myself so tired as to be unable to lay any longer so I got up & was seasick again & [?] so till we got into smoother water-- When we arrived in Charleston I felt very weak on account of my sickness but slept it off during the night and since then I have felt quite well
