Montrose 8 mo. 2, 1880My dear WifeIt was not with malice aforethought that I failed to provide myself with writing materials yet it has suited well the wildness of my feelings that I have had this excuse for not writing. But as I am beginning to be a little less sleepy I have borrowed Lillys pen & stolen a sheet of paper from Alexis so that I may supplement or modify Rachels rose colored statements about Montrose. Unless you have had it exceptionally hot again the temperature here is not very different from what it is at home yet there is a freshness & elasticity in the air which makes the heat more endurable. The country is lovely to look at—more picturesque & like
