              Awbury, Second dayJuly 3, 1892My Dear WifeWe got at breakfast this morning through the Ledger the news of the terrible disaster at Newport yesterday. Edmund Stewardsons name was given as Steuson, but we were pretty sure that it was he, & when Walter told us that he was at Newport we felt certain of it. After breakfast Tom & I walked over to Theo’s to see whether he could learn any particulars-- Theo had gone to town but Miss Browne told us that he got Annas telegram just before starting. Afterwards Alf & I went to Chestnut Hill & saw Willie Haines. He told us that Cousin Tom had gone down to Jane Haines!-- that Evelyn had left for Newport & that Ed. Crenshaw had driven up to Whitemarsh for John who was up there to spend the Fourth. So as the girls had Molly Mott & some of their other friends with them & there seemd to be nothing to be done we did not go in-- It is the saddest thing that has occurred for many years & will cast a shadow over all at Newport which will not easily be dispersed.
