              [top left corner says "from Carrie Kiss"Newport 8 mo 23rd 18676th dayMy dear FrankOn 4th day morning, werec'd thy most welcome letters with thedelightful description of thy visit to SmithHarrison's their kindness to thee and and whata treat it must have been to meet withsuch dear little children. it must have beenquite a rest and I could not but rejoicefor thee. I value the [ivry?] leaves and sprigof evergreen thee sent to me, from [Chatswerth?]Haddon Hall & K[?] particularly, andhope thee will send more such mementoeswhenever thee has an opportunity. The sprigof dark evergreen is very fragrant andthey are all in an excelent state of pre-servation. We are having another spellof showery weather, since yeterday-noontho' Tom and Alfred went out sailing for a while this morning between the showersI suppose, and Chellie & myself wentto call upon Ellen Murray, who is staying at the same place, she was at last summerthe "[Elleny?] House", and when her mother diedabout 2 weeks ago, of "congestive chills" a feverwhich they know she must have contractedat the south, tho' she was not taken sickuntil her arrival at New York, having comeon by [?]. and as she was very anxiousto come on to Newport and have her ownDoctor, they brought her on at once and shedied after a week's sickness. and they werenot alarmed about her until the very last day of her life. she seemed so bright whenthe fever intermitted which is always the case
