Quaker Relief in Europe, 1914-1922
Friends Historical Library of Swarthmore College

In the wake of World War I, American and British Quakers flocked to Europe to assist in post-War reconstruction, primarily under the auspices of the American Friends Service Committee and the Friends' War Victims' Relief Committee. This collection of over 800 images documents the conditions they discovered upon arrival in France, Germany, Austria, Russia, Poland and Serbia, and measures the progress of reconstruction. The photographs were prepared as lantern slides, and used to illustrate lectures that were used for fundraising. Frequent subjects pictured include the effects of malnourishment on children, cultures and traditions left endangered by the war, and the daily operations of relief workers.
